Autologous or Directed Donations
Autologous blood donations come from patients who donate blood for their own use. It is most effectively used when a patient has a scheduled procedure in which a transfusion is anticipated. This type of donation must be "ordered" by the patient's physician. The units are labeled to ensure the patient receives their own blood.
Directed Donations
Directed donors are donors selected by a patient or the patient's family to give blood for the patient's use. These donors are usually family members or friends of the patient who have the same blood type. Directed donors must meet the same donor requirements as a "whole blood" donor.
